BRAINVILLE 3 Daevid Allen: guitar, vocals Hugh Hopper: bass, loops Chris Cutler: drums, ambience BRAINVILLE 3 brings three legendary musicians together combining poetry, punk, jazz, art rock and noise. Founded in New York in 1998 by Allen and Hopper - with Kramer and Pip Pyle - Brainville went on to become a trio with Pip. The third incarnation with Cutler materialised in 1999, for a tour in Japan. ROOTS: Hopper and Allen first played together in 1963 in the then revolutionary "Daevid Allen Trio", with Robert Wyatt on drums -; the first group to combine free-jazz-rock forms with abstract poetry. By 1967 Daevid had become a founding member of the now legendary ‘Soft Machine’, which Hugh joined in 1968; by this time, Daevid was living in Paris and assembling the first of the still-evolving ‘Gong’s (www.planetgong.co.uk). When, occasionally, Gong was between drummers, it was Cutler who, although a full time member of ‘Henry Cow’ (‘me favourite band in the world’, Robert Wyatt), was drafted in. Later (1979) he worked with Allen on the LP ‘N’existe Pas’. Hopper and Cutler first worked together in 1993, in (ex Henry Cow) Lindsay Cooper’s ‘Oh Moscow’ project and have worked on other projects since.. BRAINVILLE – the reference is to a song by Sun Ra. While constituting a fascinating slice of experimental music history Brainville, more importantly, brings together musicians who have never stopped moving; this is not a revival project but a band that addresses its own time head on.
