Eddi Reader
Sunday 18th June – Main Stage Headliner
From the traditional to the contemporary, Eddi brings joyous life to all forms of song. Her taste in co-writers, writers, songs and players is impeccable and anything with her name on it is guaranteed musical treasure. Whilst the perfection of her technique is widely acknowledged, what sets Reader apart is the depth and quality of the emotional performance; her ability not only to move the listener but to connect her experience to that of her audience. Her passion and instinct move people in a way reminiscent of those who have influenced her work.
Jon Boden
Friday 16th June – Main Stage Headliner
Jon Boden is best known is the lead singer and main arranger of the progressive folk juggernaut Bellowhead. After twelve years, a quarter of a million album sales, seven singles on the Radio 2 playlist and selling out hundreds of venues throughout the land and beyond, including notably the Royal Albert Hall, Jon announced in 2015 that he wanted to move on. The rest of the band decided not to continue without him. Bellowhead played their final gig on May 1st 2016.
Lau
Saturday 17th June – Main Stage Headliner
Brilliant musicians, thrilling performers, free-thinking visionaries and all-round good chaps as well…small wonder Lau are regarded as the epicentre of the new folk boom. And they’ve got shelves groaning with awards, a forest’s worth of ecstatic reviews and breathless plaudits from excited audiences in various outposts of the world ringing in their ears to prove it.
False Lights
Saturday 17th June – Main Stage Headliner
Beverley Folk Festival is excited to announce False Lights for 2017. One of the hottest folk-rock groups on the scene, their influences range from Fairport Convention to Radiohead, resulting in a fresh and unique sound that is wowing audiences of all ages.
Martin & Eliza Carthy
Sunday 18th June – Supporting Eddi Reader
In 2017, Beverley Folk Festival welcomes living legend Martin Carthy and his daughter the celebrated musician Eliza Carthy. Rightly regarded as one of the great innovators of folk, it is wonderful to welcome Martin back to Beverley. Eliza is also no stranger to our event and to have them both back in 2017 sets up another festival to remember.
Heidi Talbot
Friday 16th June – Supporting Jon Boden
Heidi Talbot’s fifth solo LP plays to the tune of quiet skips and giant leaps. It crosses the ages, jumps into the unknown, traverses oceans and musical styles – from folk, through Americana, to classic pop, and back again. The Co Kildare singer / songwriter, who now resides in Scotland with her musical partner and husband John McCusker, is joined by a host of musicians and co-writers on the album, including Louis Abbott (Admiral Fallow), Duke Special, Adam Holmes and Boo Hewerdine.
Kathryn Roberts & Sean Lakeman
Sunday 18th June (Afternoon)
Twice recent winners of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Award for Best Duo – 2016 & 2013 – the couple’s intimacy and strength of passion on stage have won them many fans and an enviable reputation as ‘Songwriters par excellence’- (fRoots), whose greatly varied original songs cover such subjects as wicked mermaids, Norwegian legends, and a lonely whale.
Sam Kelly & The Lost Boys
Friday 16th June (Evening)
Sam’s debut EP – entitled ‘Your Way Home’ was released in March 2013, which swiftly created a buzz of interest in the folk scene for Sam’s music. He followed this up with the release of the widely acclaimed ‘Spokes’ EP in February 2015. This cemented Sam’s place further as one of the most exciting young prospects in the folk scene.
The Hut People

Taking the audience on a musical journey around the World, English instrumental duo The Hut People (Sam Pirt and Gary Hammond) have firmly established themselves as one of THE most unique, entertaining and best-loved acts on the UK folk scene today. Mixing global rhythms with folk tunes from Quebec to Spain, Scandinavia to Sussex and everywhere in between, this is a quirky celebration of our rich musical heritage – and it works so well!
Michael Chapman
Sunday 18th June (Afternoon)
Michael Chapman first became known on the London and Cornish folk circuits in 1966. Playing a blend of atmospheric and autobiographical material he established a reputation for intensity and innovation. Signed to EMI’s Harvest label he recorded a quartet of classic albums. LPs like ‘Rainmaker’ and ‘Wrecked Again’ defined the melancholic observer role Michael was to make his own, mixing intricate guitar instrumentals with a full band sound.
Andy Cutting
Andy Cutting is a rarity. A musician’s musician (BBC Radio 2 Folk Award Winner Best Musician 2008, 2011 & 2016): a soulful and technically outstanding melodeon practitioner with an ear for a fine tune. Many of his tunes have been purloined along the way: some considered contemporary classics on the folk scene. But then, Andy is also a warm and emotive performer, modestly engaging his audiences with his self-deprecating wit and then flooring them with downright staggering musicianship.
Jim Moray
Saturday 17th June (Afternoon)
13 years ago Jim Moray released an album that changed the way people perceived, played and presented English folk music. Sweet England arrived at a time when, with just a few notable exceptions, traditional music was performed much as it had been in the 1970s to an audience of insiders and aficionados. The album was received with open arms by those who understood that the music of the people has survived for centuries by being just that – an expression of the times. Absent were the familiar affectations of those who sought to preserve an invented historical aesthetic, Jim Moray was a Bowie and Blur fan singing ballads with all of his influences unfurled.
Ewan McLennan

Ewan McLennan has come to be known as a guitarist at the very forefront of his generation; a troubadour, balladeer and storyteller cut in the old style; a singer that can move audiences with his passion and pathos; and a songwriter for whom social justice is still a burning issue. From a BBC Horizon Award for his debut album to his performances on the iconic Transatlantic Sessions, recent years have been marked by numerous awards and accolades for his music.
Moore, Moss & Rutter

Moore Moss Rutter are a trio of musicians who are reworking traditional native English tunes and songs into something far more contemporary. They aim to breathe life back into ancient material through complex arrangement, virtuosic musicianship, powerful aesthetic and an ear for detail. Their tools – Violin, Melodeon, Guitar and Voice – may be simple enough, but they allow MMR to take the audience on a journey through utmost subtlety, rustic artisanal beauty, and tempestuous climax.
Dan Walsh
Friday 16th June – Supporting Jon Boden & Saturday 17th June (Afternoon)
Touted as one of the finest banjo players in the UK as well as being a superb singer, songwriter and guitarist, Dan Walsh is described as ‘the real deal’ (UNCUT).His eclectic and innovative approach has led to many exciting collaborations alongside his solo work and the UFQ including tours with Northeast concertina legend Alistair Anderson and recent work with sensational Indian sarangi player Suhail Yusuf Khan as well as Canadian country singer Meaghan Blanchard.
Jaywalkers
Jaywalkers have cemented their place as one of the most exciting, virtuosic and entertaining young bands working on the British Folk scene. Effortlessly creating a unique sound based on their collective and individual musical backgrounds, the band takes influence from Folk, Bluegrass, Country and Western Swing music in the form of virtuosic instrumentals, three part harmony and impressive slap bass. Add good humour, tasteful arrangements and exceptional musicianship to the mix and they are guaranteed to put a smile on your face.
Dallahan
Sunday 18th June (Evening)
Dallahan are one of the fastest rising forces on the international folk circuit; heavily rooted in traditional Irish music, but with hugely diverse backgrounds and influences. They call on their mixed Irish, Scottish and Hungarian heritage to create a unique and seamless musical montage, drawing in influences from jazz, funk, pop and classical music.
Gren Bartley Band
Sunday 18th June (Afternoon)
Gren Bartley is a prolific and exceptional songwriter. He is constantly touring and forever writing. Gren’s live work captures his “phenomenal” guitar playing & poetry driven lyrics, backed up by beautiful vocal harmonies and string arrangements from band members Kath Ord & Sarah Smout. The drive of the music and the orchestral flourishes sweep the audience into the narratives and subtly embellish the songs.
Daoirí Farrell
Saturday 17th June – Supporting Lau & False Lights
A former electrician, who decided to change profession after seeing Christy Moore perform on Irish TV, Dublin-born traditional singer and bouzouki player Daoirí (pronounced ‘Derry’) Farrell is being described by some of the biggest names in Irish folk music as one of most important singers to come out of Ireland in recent years, and is about to deliver the album to prove them right.
Henry Priestman
Saturday 17th June (Evening)
Henry usually performs as a duo alongside fellow musician and songwriter Les Glover, and often with other band musicians to suit (The Men of a Certain Age) – yet whatever the combination he has a charming affect on audiences everywhere. A clever combination of new songs, album gems and some of those classic Christians hits like ‘Ideal World’ ‘Born Again’ and ‘Forgotten Town’ make for an engaging show.
Lauren Housley
Lauren Housley is a 28-year-old singer-songwriter on the move. Born and raised in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, she had a talent for singing from an early age. Her first move at 18, was from her hometown to Newcastle to study theatre and performance at the university. To pay her way through her studies, she worked as an assistant stage manager at The Sage in Gateshead. This gave her the opportunity to see what she was studying by day, played out on stage every night, by the very best at their craft.
Ben Maggs

Award winning critically acclaimed ‘Contemporary Folk’ Artist Ben Maggs is sure to ‘enchant’ and ‘mesmerise’ with his ‘songs that will leave your heart tingling by the final stanza’. The last year has seen Ben headlining all over the UK, playing to ‘awe-inspired audiences’ and also supporting The Proclaimers at sell out shows – having to decline the crowd’s unanimous cries for an encore to make sure the main act could be on stage on time!
Ninebarrow
Sunday 18th June (Evening)
Ninebarrow are impressing audiences across the country with their innovative and captivating take on the folk tradition. Described by our Festival Patron Mike Harding as sounding ‘damn fine’, by 2015 headliner Seth Lakeman as ‘a fantastic duo’ and by 2016 headliner Kate Rusby as ‘absolutely amazing’. Jon Whitley and Jay LaBouchardiere combine breath taking vocal harmonies and melodies, delivering songs that are inspired and rooted in the landscape and history of the British Isles.
Edwina Hayes
Sunday 18th June – Supporting Eddi Reader
Edwina Hayes is a Yorkshire based singer songwriter described by Nanci Griffith as ‘The Sweetest Voice in England.’ Her version of Randy Newman’s ‘Feels Like Home’ was featured in the major motion picture ‘My Sister’s Keeper’ earning her numerous new fans. Her shows are a pleasing blend of well crafted songs – beautifully sung and played – coupled with a natural charm that audiences everywhere find appealing. She appears to be totally at ease whether performing in an intimate venue-or from the UK’s finest stages.
The Ale Marys
The Ale Marys are, by their own admission, a band built on longterm relationships. Gerry and Ani McNeice – familiar faces on the live sound scene with their award-winning PA team ‘Wee Dog Sound’ – have spent a lifetime together making music, since they were in their teens. Bass player Nick Downes has worked with Gerry since 1985 and although Berni Gilmore is not The Ale Marys original drummer he’s been known to the others since the late 1970s. Even the relative ‘newbie’ Dave Turner has clocked up seven years!
Jessica Lawson
Jessica Lawson sings and accompanies herself on autoharp and acoustic guitar. Her original songs reflect a background in folk music
and a love of Americana as she sings stories about the sea, love, loss, war, and a few ‘fallen’ women. Jessica is fast building a reputation on the folk scene and has performed a number of high profile and exciting shows, supporting Eddi Reader and Dave Rotherary, as well as appearing on bills alongside Cara Dillon and Barbara Dickson.
Kelly Oliver

Kelly Oliver is a singer-songwriter, guitarist and harmonicist, described by The Times as an artist who ‘blends traditional with bold, indie-pop’. Her debut album ‘This Land’, funded by an Emerging Excellence Award by Help Musicians UK, gained a 4* review from The Telegraph and her second album ‘Bedlam’ was included in The Sunday Times Essential New Releases.
Underhill Rose

Harmonies. Soul-touching lyrics. Eye-catching stage presence. Underhill Rose has become synonymous with beautiful music, charming personalities, and rippling success. In the last four years, the all-female trifecta has independently released two albums in the top of the Americana Music Association Airplay Chart and the Roots Music Report Chart, all the while garnering critical acclaim from around the globe.
Jonas and Jane
Jonas and Jane are an Americana Duo from the UK who consist of harmony driven and bluegrass influenced folk. They have toured Texas, Colorado and Arizona and have played many UK festivals including two stages at Maverick Americana Festival and the main stage at Carfest South to over 35,000 people, following a live performance of their song ‘Whispered’ on the Chris Evans BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show.
Stillhouse

Progressive acoustic music at its finest, Stillhouse are a mandolin, guitar, double bass and vocal trio ensemble, presenting beautifully crafted original songs and meticulously arranged instrumental material with roots in bluegrass, jazz and folk. After a jam together on a rainy Monday at the beginning of February, Jonny Neaves (guitar, vocals), Polly Bolton (mandolin, vocals) and Matt Mefford (double bass) began collaborating to form what is now Stillhouse.
Rachel Croft
Sunday 18th June (Afternoon)
Musician and songwriter based in York, Rachel is regularly seen busking around the city centre, and playing with the Croft and Mullen jazz and soul band in the area. Songwriting Influences include Eva Cassidy, Joni Mitchell, Ray LaMontagne and Matt Corby to name a few, focusing on complex vocal melodies to a background of finger-picked acoustic guitar.
